Winterset to Des Moines, Iowa

We had a covered bridges and movies day. The covered bridges were made famous by the book and movie, "The Bridges of Madison County". The movie starred Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep, and we had lunch at the diner they met in. The staff even showed us which seats they used. We also visited John Wayne's birthplace. The Madison County Historical complex is a very interesting place with a huge collection of memorabilia plus an old mansion beautifully decorated. Leaving Madison County we head for Des Moines, and the Iowa State Fair parade. The parade is full of dancing troupes, bands, tractors and electioneering politicians. An interesting mix. It takes two hours and luckily the thunderstorms pass before we get there. A diverse day of sight seeing!!
